This was our second summer holiday in a row at beautiful Pod Orechom.

We had a fantastic time again! As we all were really exhausted when we arrived (having missed our flight the day before), we spent many days just sitting reading and playing in the garden.

The hiking trips we did were: Hervatov wooden church, Chata Cergov (20km!) fantastic and exhausting day. Swimming twice at Kupele outdoor pool.
We do hope to be back next year!!

Our third visit to Pod Orechom. We come for the peace and quiet, the birdlife and the walking.

We have made good friends in Bardejov communicating in a strange mixture of German, English and a few words of Slovak.

We have had a wonderfully restful holiday as before. We have seen black redstarts in abundance, serins, a black stork and grey wagtails (they are predominantly yellow).

Geoff & Sheelagh - Edinburgh, May 2012

What a wonderful place to spend time resting, exploring and enjoying Slovakia. We arrived in cool damp weather to a warm welcoming cottage and a delicious meal prepared by Monika.

Visited Bardejov and the spa, enjoying a game of mini gold and the open-air museum. Went rafting at Pienniny Dunajec and then hired bikes. Visited Spis Castle (awesome) and popped in to Levoca. Spent a day relaxing in the cottage and walking locally.

We would highly recommend Pod Orechom as a place to stay!

Peter & Lesley - Penarth, Wales, August 2011

We've had a truly wonderful two weeks at this cottage Pod Orechom. Sitting here now and reflecting on our holiday, it rather feels like leaving home! Everything was just perfect, the cottage created in such an inspiring and homely and beautiful way. We're really sad to leave tomorrow!

We did quite a lot of walking - short walks and long walks - up to 12 km which the children feel extremely proud of (children's ages 10, 8 and 6) and went to the outdoor heated swimming pool three times at Bardejovske Kupele.

Rafting Holidays

We have had a fantastic couple of weeks. Some of the things we have done (highly recommended!):

Lubovna castle - saw a falconry display. Bardejov - Basilica, main square, walls, restaurants & cafes. Bardejov Spa - swam at the heated open air pool. Dukla Gap - Death Valley - seeing the Russian tanks abandoned in the battlefield. White water rafting (as opposed to the traditional rafts) at Cerveny Klastor. One child fell in!! The guide was very quick to jump in the river and rescue him!!

This was exactly what we hoped for when deciding to visit Eastern Europe before it would be too late. Everyone still seems to have time, so life has not been sacrificed to 'efficiency'. In short, it has been a great week.

Who of us in North Western Europe would be able to declare that they have a pair of red-backed shrikes feeding their young ones in their own back garden?!

Let us hope that the dyke that our kids have built in the stream (after all we come from The Netherlands) does not cause any flooding in this beautiful village and things and values stay a bit as they are today.

Jaap, Yvonne, Noor & Siem - Harderwijk, The Netherlands, July/August 2010

I really loved the house, especially the really comfy beds, the toasty fire and the 1500-piece puzzle that seemed to consume us. Monika was very friendly and insisted on giving us eggs.

Spis Castle - OK, long drive though. We preferred the local walks around the house. Lots of birds seen from a distance, fungi collected be we were unsure which ones were edible - suggest a fungi book for the house!

Hugo, Marian, Ella & Harriet - Greenwich, London, August 2009

The house is a lovely place to spend a holiday: peaceful, relaxing and comfortable. On arrival it was nice to have a lovely meal prepared by Monika. We travelled extensively. Some highlights were Spis Castle, Dunojec Gorge, Lomnicky Stit, and Aqua City in Poprad, the world's greenest water park powered by natural geo thermal springs.

Spis is a must and is spectacular. When rafting in the gorge you can make the return journey by bike to Cerveny Klastar which is an easy 9km ride and relatively flat. The cable car to the summit of Lomnicky Stit is expensive (about £100 for 2 adults + 2 children) but well worth it, in fact it is a must.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and cannot wait to return.

Had a great week, glorious sun framed by spectacular downpours at either end.

Every day different, interesting and revitalising - although we did travel further afield, we could have spent the whole week in the Bardejov area, or even just in Krize, and not get close to seeing all there is to see and do.

Lovely cottage, loads of useful information and Sami the dog next door. Perfect!

Rosie & Colin - Edinburgh, July 2009

Fantastic weather, superb food cooked by Monika the neighbour. Enjoyed their company and learning Slovakian and the Slovak ways. Nice café culture in Bardejov square. Beautiful countryside.

Found the monument to the partisans on the hill behind the cottage to be very poignant and nice to see it so well maintained.

John, Angela & Jake - Chester, September 2009

After arrival we had a fantastic three course meal cooked by the wife of the farmer next door.

The cottage is comfortable, even in October, but the spare blankets have been very useful. If you are used to an open fire or wood-burning stove then the fire is fairly simple to get to grips with.

Birdwatching Holidays
Birdwatching Holiday

Lovely hamlet and valley and friendly neighbours.

Had a lovely walk to Velka Javorina (c. 6 km away). Picked mushrooms, especially chanterelles, ceps (boletii) and parasol mushrooms in the forest, along with picking bilberries, cloud berries and wild raspberries and collecting wild mint and oregano and thyme.

Saw plenty of birds, Caer (our 10 year old) was thrilled with that. He has compiled a list of birds he has seen whilst here:

water pipit, golden eagle, raven, ring ousel, nutcracker, stork, red-backed shrike, lesser whitethroat, whitethroat, garden warbler, blackcap, lesser-spotted woodpecker, Syrian woodpecker, black woodpecker, nutcracker, jay,

lesser spotted eagle (heard only), Ural owl? (heard only), honey buzzard, common buzzard, redstart (very common including in garden), black redstart, spotted flycatcher, marsh tit, willow tit, coal tit, blue tit, black kite.

Bird-watching Holiday

Only recently taken up birdwatching. Saw a black redstart for the first time ever. Very exciting!

The red walk from Hervatov (you must see the church) is easier to follow than the blue route from Krize to the ridge below Zobrak. The walk from Hervatov is a must. We saw a lesser spotted eagle.

Geoff & Sheelagh - Edinburgh, May 2008

Great cottage, lovely village - lady and family next door very helpful.

Pieniny National Park with Dunajec gorge a must - especially on the rafts. The Tatras are also good to visit in the rain and mists!!

Miro's information is excellent and very informative. You must eat at Huberts in Bardejov - excellent food - menu in English!

Canoeing and Rafting Holiday

We had a very nice week with exceptionally hot weather (30-35ºC). The cottage is very cosy, especially the upper floor.

The most beautiful thing we saw around were the little wooden churches, there are three not far at all from the cottage. They are really beautiful. Thank you very much for a great holiday!

Katarina, Paul, Alexandra & Oliver- Strasbourg, France, July 2007

In the cottage - we felt like at home.

Our five kids (including the six month old baby) enjoyed our stay, the woods, the long walks. We are grateful to Mr Germuska for all the information he left behind in the house, maps and brochures, and contact persons - to get fishing permit. Despite we weren't lucky to catch any trout, we enjoyed trying it.

Geza & family - Budapest, July 2007

A really relaxing holiday. This was our first holiday in Slovakia and it is still quite unspoilt. The house is excellent and we felt at home immediately.

Day trips to Spis Castle, Tatras, etc. are a must, though there is also much beautiful countryside just a short walk from the cottage. For a walk in the Tatras without the crowds, park at the ski lifts to the west of Ždiar and walk up into the Belianske Tatry. Miro's instructions and information was the best we have received for any holiday home.

David, Jackie & Joanne - Wantage, Oxon, July 2007

A very nice restful week in this very cosy cottage. Bardejov is fab with plenty to see and do.

Very friendly village and the neighbours are friendly and communication surprisingly easy by sign language. Good memories of attractive villages, lovely scenery, interesting sights and enough raspberries around to be going home with several pots of home-made jam!!

Paul - London, August 2006

Our first trip to Slovakia. Everyone very friendly and helpful despite (because of?) our lack of any grasp of the language! House is very comfortable, particularly beds and bathrooms.

Don't miss visiting the Tatra mountains. Leave early if you want the cable cars. We left before 10am and just managed to get a ticket for the last (5.30pm) cable car to the top of Lomnicky Stit. You wouldn't want to miss it, fantastic views even through gaps in the cloud.
